Yes — you can upload a profile avatar. Accepted image formats are png, jpg, jpeg, gif, and webp. For best results use a square image; larger images will be resized. If you have trouble uploading, contact support.

Sessions are persistent — by default you remain logged in for up to one year unless you explicitly log out. For security, we use HTTPS and secure, HTTP-only cookies.

Upload your manuscript and choose a package. Our AI-powered pipeline delivers proofreading, copy editing, line editing, and (for Complete) developmental feedback — with Pro/Complete offering a track-changes review so you stay in control. Most paid edits are processed quickly (typically 15–45 minutes).

Paid edits typically begin processing as soon as payment is completed and are usually finished within 15–45 minutes. Free Proofreads are also processed automatically but may be lower priority in the queue and are limited to one manuscript per account every 30 days. Very large manuscripts (our system flags those over ~500 pages / ~125,000 words) may require manual review before processing, which can add time; if manual review is needed we'll contact you with next steps.

For Pro and Complete packages you'll get a track-changes review in your dashboard so you can accept or reject suggestions; paid edits remain accessible from your Dashboard. Free Proofread provides a clean corrected download (no track-changes view) and the download is available for 7 days after completion. You'll also receive an email notification when the edit is ready. If you don't receive an email within an hour after payment or completion, please check your Dashboard (My Manuscripts) and spam/junk; if it's not present, contact support (hello@bookeditor.io) and include your order details so we can investigate.

Two ways to try our editing: 1) Preview (landing page) — a quick, no-account sample analysis that looks at roughly the first ~10 pages so you can see how our editing works before signing up. No login required for this quick sample. 2) Free Proofread (account required) — when you upload from your account, we process your entire manuscript at no charge (limited to one Free Proofread per account every 30 days). Free-tier uploads are retained for 7 days and then automatically removed. If you want long-term access, repeat reviews, or a track-changes version, upgrade to Pro or Complete.

For Pro and Complete packages, your edits appear in the Dashboard where you can accept or reject suggestions in a track-changes style review. Use the "Download Final Draft" button in the review view to download the edited manuscript once you're satisfied. Free Proofreads provide a clean corrected download (no track-changes view). You can upload .docx or .txt manuscripts for professional AI-powered editing. Individual file size must be 100MB or less. We count pages at roughly 250 words per page and use a flat-rate threshold of 500 pages (about 125,000 words); manuscripts above that threshold may be flagged for manual review which can affect pricing or processing time. If a manual review is required, we'll contact you with next steps.

Very large manuscripts (our system flags those over ~500 pages, roughly 125,000 words) may require a brief manual review before processing. You can upload manuscripts up to 100MB in size.

If an upload or .docx extraction error occurs, try saving the file from Word as a new .docx and re-uploading, or upload a .txt version. If problems persist, contact support (hello@bookeditor.io) with the file and a brief description and we'll help recover your manuscript.

Free-tier manuscripts are retained for 7 days and are then automatically removed. Paid edits (Pro and Complete) remain accessible in your dashboard; if you need a paid manuscript removed sooner, contact support and we'll assist.

Manuscripts uploaded to BookEditor.io are stored on secure cloud storage (Amazon S3) or on our servers, depending on the job. All uploads and downloads use HTTPS in transit and access to manuscript files is restricted to our processing systems. Free-tier uploads are retained for 7 days and then removed; paid edits remain accessible in your dashboard. If you need a manuscript removed sooner or have a specific security request, contact support at hello@bookeditor.io.

We currently support only .docx and .txt manuscript files. If you have a PDF, save or export it from your editor as a .docx (preferred) or .txt and then upload. If you're unsure how to convert your file or have trouble, contact support at hello@bookeditor.io and we'll help.

We count words by splitting the extracted manuscript text on whitespace and convert to pages using roughly 250 words per page. The system computes page_count = max(1, round(word_count / 250)) so the minimum page count is 1. Our flat-rate threshold is 500 pages (about 125,000 words); manuscripts above this threshold may be flagged for manual review which can affect pricing or processing time — we'll contact you if additional review is required.

Free-tier uploads are retained for 7 days and then automatically removed by our cleanup process. If your Free Proofread job is older than 7 days it may have been deleted as expected. Paid edits remain accessible in your Dashboard. If you need recovery help, contact support (hello@bookeditor.io) with your account email and manuscript title and we'll check backups and options.

No — you can get started without a credit card. We offer a Free Proofread at no charge (this processes your entire manuscript and is limited to one manuscript per account every 30 days). Processed results and the corrected download for Free Proofreads are available for 7 days after completion; after 7 days the free-tier upload and files are removed. To get track-changes review, line editing, or developmental feedback, choose Pro or Complete and complete payment at checkout. Note: the Preview/sample tool on our homepage does not require an account (it analyzes the first ~10 pages); however, the Full Free Proofread requires you to be logged in to your BookEditor.io account to upload a manuscript.

We offer three packages: Free Proofread (free) for basic grammar/spelling corrections and a clean corrected download; Pro Edit ($149) for proofreading plus line editing, consistency checks, and a track-changes review; Complete Edit ($299) includes everything in Pro plus a developmental editorial letter and story bible. We accept major credit and debit cards via Stripe Checkout for one-time payments. As of March 6, 2026, Stripe Checkout is our primary provider (replacing older one-time checkout flows). After a successful charge you'll receive an email receipt automatically. If you encounter issues at checkout, please try again or contact support at hello@bookeditor.io and include your account email and manuscript title so we can assist and reconcile your order.

Yes — after a successful checkout you'll receive an email receipt for your payment. Receipts are sent automatically (typically immediately) and include the manuscript title, package, and amount paid. If you don't receive a receipt within an hour, check your spam/junk folder or contact support at hello@bookeditor.io and include your order details so we can help.

If you believe you're eligible for a refund, contact support at hello@bookeditor.io with your account email, manuscript title, order ID (if available), and a brief reason. Refunds are processed through Stripe and, if approved, typically appear on your statement within 5–10 business days depending on your bank. For privacy and security we do not store raw card data; agents will follow our internal refund procedure to review and process requests.

Yes — you must be logged in to your BookEditor.io account to start and complete payment for Pro or Complete packages. If you don't have an account, create one (it's free) before checking out. If you hit any issues during checkout, email hello@bookeditor.io and include your account email and manuscript title so we can assist.

First, please check your Dashboard (My Manuscripts) — paid jobs should appear there. Also check your email (including spam/junk) for a receipt or confirmation. Paid edits typically begin processing immediately and are usually finished within 15–45 minutes; in rare cases it can take up to an hour. If you still don't see your job after an hour, contact us at hello@bookeditor.io or use the contact form and include your account email, manuscript title, and any receipt or order ID so we can investigate and reconcile your payment quickly.

Yes. We enforce HTTPS site-wide and use secure, HTTP-only cookies (SameSite=Lax). Sessions may remain active for up to one year unless you log out. Uploaded manuscripts and downloads use secure storage and encrypted transit. Free Proofreads are processed on our local AI instance (they are not sent to third-party model providers). Pro and Complete edits use a third-party model provider (via OpenRouter/Gemini) and any data sent to that provider is transmitted securely over HTTPS. Manuscript files may be stored on our servers or in secure cloud storage (Amazon S3) for processing; free-tier uploads are removed after 7 days. Payments are handled via Stripe Checkout and we do not store raw card data. If you have specific privacy or security requirements, contact support at hello@bookeditor.io.

Short answer: your manuscript is processed securely. Free Proofreads are run on our local AI instance (no third‑party model transit). Pro and Complete packages use a third‑party model provider via OpenRouter (e.g., Gemini); when we use those services your manuscript text is transmitted securely (HTTPS). We do not store payment card data, and manuscript files are stored only as needed for processing and per our retention policy—free uploads are removed after 7 days. If you have special privacy requirements, contact support and we'll discuss options.
